The Global Protest to Fight Inequality is the Alliance’s biggest mobilisation of the year. It takes place as a counterpoint to the World Economic Forum, the gathering of the 1% in Swiss mountain resort of Davos every January. Activists across the world take action to protest against inequality and demand People’s Recovery Plans.
Dear Heads of State,
We write to you as people with one message - we need wealth taxes.
The beginning of 2022 has brought us to a critical juncture. It has been repeated over the last two years that Covid-19 is an inequality virus. During the pandemic, at the same time that billionaire wealth is spiralling out of control, billions face a daily struggle to survive. Multiple crises have converged from vaccine inequality to unemployment, from our rights to protest to our underfunded public services, from climate change to a debt crisis.
We know that it is our actions that will create the just, equal and sustainable societies we envisage. We also know that it requires deep system change. Nowhere is this reality starker than how the wealth of the richest has spiralled during the pandemic, whilst the majority of us have struggled to survive.
The solutions are known to us and to you. Wealth taxes on the richest in all our societies would raise trillions of dollars. This is money that we need to redistribute, to build societies and economies that work for ordinary people and leave us with a livable planet.
We also need to tax wealth because of the extreme concentration of power that the hoarding of wealth drives. It is corrupting our democracies, people’s trust in politics and our social contract. We can’t live in societies where the richest make the rules.
Any talk of ‘recovery’ from Covid-19 must include taxing the rich. People across the world - every country in it - are demanding the rich pay their fair share. History paints a bleak picture of what the endgame of extremely unequal societies looks like. We do not accept that fate. For all our well-being - rich and poor alike - it’s time to confront inequality and choose to tax the rich.
Since the Covid-19 pandemic hit, billionaires have increased their wealth by an astonishing 68%, while many people have experienced unprecedented levels of inequality. Many people have lost their livelihoods, and many more have not had access to life-saving vaccines. Others have seen austerity budgeting mean they go without basic social services.
Across the world activists on the frontlines of inequality are taking a stand and saying this greed of the wealthy elite cannot go on any longer. It's Time to #TaxTheRich.
For every tweet you share, you amplify the voices of thousands of activists calling for change. Our governments must know the movement demanding real change is growing more powerful. They can see us! They can hear us! Add your voice and let them know why we need to #TaxTheRich.

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the way we do our protests have dramatically changed - but our purpose and aspirations remain the same.
Here are the ways you can join the Global Protest to #FightInequality:
The Fight Inequality Alliance! We are a growing global movement organising and mobilising to counter the excessive concentration of power and wealth in the hands of a small elite. We are building a just, equal and sustainable world.
We unite a wide range of social movements, grassroots and community based organisations, and individual activists from across the world who share a vision and purpose in fighting the structural causes of inequality together.
We are mobilising in over 35 countries across the world. We build the strength of our national alliances, and leverage our collective voice and demands nationally, regionally and globally so that the views and actions of people on the frontlines of inequality are driving change.
Our fight against inequality is a fight for a just, equal and sustainable world.
The pandemic has laid bare and supercharged the systemic inequalities we are fighting more blatantly than ever. We are facing the biggest single rise in inequality since the Great Depression while the 1% continue to make massive profits and increase their wealth. Over the past two years of the Covid-19 pandemic, billionaires have increased their wealth by 68%, while many people have experienced unprecedented levels of inequality. Many people have lost their livelihoods, and many more have not had access to life-saving vaccines. Others have seen austerity budgeting mean they go without basic social services. This cannot go on any longer. The insane level of wealth made by billionaires is fueling inequality and instead should be used to address the massive inequality levels we are seeing the world over. This is why we are saying It's Time to #TaxTheRich.
Revenue generated from wealth taxes can help fund People’s Covid-19 Recovery Plans and drastically reduce the impacts of the pandemic and truly fight inequality. We need to continue to challenge the problematic ideology that has created the inequality crisis we find ourselves in. We need to challenge the unequal concentration of wealth and power in the hands of the few wealthy elite.
From 15-22 January 2022, join the people powered protest kicking off 2022! We will come together across the world both online and offline to demand we Tax The Rich and build People’s Recovery Plans to Covid-19 led by the people at the frontlines of inequality. We will mobilise to make the voices of people on the frontlines of inequality heard and call on governments to listen to their citizens for solutions to end inequality. And wherever you are, the Global Protest to #FightInequality needs you!
In January 2022, global elites will gather for the World Economic Forum face to face again in Davos, Switzerland for their annual meeting . In reality, we are living in a broken system that has failed billions of people across the world. They will sit in Davos and discuss the future of our countries and our economies with no legitimacy, as those who created our crisis. During Covid-19, billionaire wealth already increased by August 2021 more than it has in the past 15 years from $8 trillion to $13.5 trillion, while over 5 million people have died. In Davos they will not discuss real solutions like taxing the rich. We know the solutions cannot come from them.
